Review by Lauren - The Dead-Tossed Waves

The Dead-Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan

Gabry lives a quiet life. As safe a life as is possible in a town trapped between a forest and the ocean, in a world teeming with the dead, who constantly hunger for those still living.

She’s content on her side of the Barrier, happy to let her friends dream of the Dark City up the coast while she watches from the top of her lighthouse.

But there are threats the Barrier cannot hold back. Threats like the secrets Gabry’s mother thought she left behind when she escaped from the Sisterhood and the Forest of Hands and Teeth.

Like the cult of religious zealots who worship the dead.

Like the stranger from the forest who seems to know Gabry.

And suddenly, everything is changing.

One reckless moment, and half of Gabry’s generation is dead, the other half imprisoned. Now Gabry only knows one thing: she must face the forest of her mother’s past in order to save herself and the one she loves.

First Impression: After reading The Forest of Hands and Teeth, I was excited for the sequel but this wasn't a 6 month waiting affair. I wasn't too crazy about the first book so my expectations weren't incredibly high.

The Dead-Tossed Waves starts years after The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Mary, the main character from before is actually Gabry's mother (which I'm sure people figured out so I'm sorry if you're disappointed but really?). So basically, if you didn't read the first book, you don't have to. You will manage just fine, and honestly, this one was better so unless you feel deprived at the end, you can skip The Forest. The connections between both books are there, but don't take away from the story.

I was really depressed after reading The Forest of Hands and Teeth but not this time. I felt more connected to these characters and was a lot less annoyed by the whole situation. There's a lot more hope this time and I felt like I could breathe? Did anyone else feel that way?

I actually really enjoyed The Dead-Tossed Waves. It's the first book I've read in a while (awful bloggers, we know we are), and I was admittedly impressed with the writing especially after all the crap I've tried to read lately. Gave me this newfound appreciation or something? Anyhow guys, Alex and I are kindof back. Kindof? Short review but it's better than the past 2 months without a post :)

4.5/6 shelves!

oh and here's a trailer if you're interested :)

Yeah, this book is on my wishlist (further down though), but I also thought The Forest of hands and Teeth was only so-so. Maybe it's the zombies :o
